Matt Dillahunty
Belief, Knowledge And Reality

Matt talks about when it's appropriate to believe and when it's better to withhold belief. Several years ago, lifelong Christian Matt Dillahunty delved into apologetics in an effort to be a better and more persuasive defender of the faith. He was sabotaged in this enterprise by his own intellectual honesty, and found his way to atheism and our little community.

Since joining Atheist Community of Austin (ACA), Matt has worked tirelessly; he has hosted the Atheist Experience TV show during a period of growing world-wide popularity. He is a permanent fixture on the Non-Prophets Radio show as it has grown from a small audience to being one of the most popular atheist podcasts available.

He currently works as a Software Engineer at a large Austin-based data management firm that specializes in supporting auto sales and service. Matt Dillahunty
Visions of Hell

Most religions address the afterlife, including some cosmic system of rewards and punishment. Many of these afterlife claims include some place of torture, torment or purging that we might tend to generalize as "hell".

In this lecture, we'll take a tour through a number of different concepts of hell by inspecting the art and literature that have helped spread this ubiquitous meme - even among the secular. While some modern theologians have abandoned claims of a literal hell, others continue to promote views that include lakes of fire and laughing saints. If Christianity and other religions were to die off tomorrow, would the concept of hell slip away as well?

Matt Dillahunty
The History of the Biblical Canon

While individual believers hold different views on the interpretation, reliability and authority of The Bible, it remains the only tangible source for Christian beliefs and claims. In this lecture we'll take a critical look at the history of this collection of ancient writings, the political and doctrinal battles which led to the current canon as well as the books and doctrines which fell by the wayside.

The Atheist Community of Austin (ACA) hosts a monthly lecture series as a community service and a means of promoting and disseminating ideas of interest to atheists and the greater Austin community. Lecture topics usually focus on core areas of atheist interest such as science, skepticism, the impact of religion, philosophy, church/state separation, and community activism. While many of the lecturers are PhDs, lectures are targeted to a lay audience of people who want to enrich their understanding.

The ACA is a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
